August 21 - 22, 2010

Realizing that Parlour No. 17 would mark our final show before turning the mature and legal age of 18, we decided this would be a good time to revisit some of our past shows and put together a mini retrospective of what and where Parlour has been before moving forward. As all histories are subjective narratives anyway, we decided it would be much more honest and interesting to give this job to someone else. Enter Meenakshi Thirukode, a playful and innovative curator whose practice is very much interested in institutional critique. Fragments, her vision of our project not only reaches into the past, but into a fictional apocalyptic future.

Parlour No. 17 includes works by the following artists from past Parlour shows: Mai Ueda, Stephanie Michelle Max and Jeffrey Max, Ali Aschman and Andrzej Nowicki (Little Guy Xylophone), Lane Arthur, Jennifer Dudley, Evie Falci, Ted Mineo, Hein Koh, Colette Murphy, Colette Robbins, Alison Blickle, Corey D'Augustine, Langdon Graves, Trish Tillman, Beau Buck, Stefano Minzi, Selena Kimball, Jessica Slaven, Lara Allen, Orit Ben-Shitrit and Harold Moss, Amanda Friedman, Anthony Discenza, Daniel Eatock and Faten Kanaan.

Parlour No. 16, Golden Tales, explores the invented worlds of Lara Allen, Megha Gupta, Faten Kanaan, Sandra Mack-Valencia and Natalia Yovane. Through their use of visionary and mythical iconography as well as a broad range of media, each artist develops their own unique mythology. In this way, Golden Tales strives to explore how, even today, we desire to be rooted in a mythical sensibility. These artists use constructed and remembered mythical icons, fictional and nonfictional fragments of history, in order to develop new realities. Golden Tales is hosted by Fawad Khan in his Brooklyn apartment.

Bureaucracy Now!, Parlour No. 15, is the first Parlour exhibition to take place outside of New York City. The show is guest curated by Elysa Lozano for Autonomous Organization and hosted by artist Jon Meyer in his San Francisco live-work space. It features the works of Amy Balkin, Anthony Discenza, Daniel Eatock, Josh Greene, Jonn Herschend, InCUBATE, Packard Jennings, Leo Marz, Jon Meyer, Kristin Neidlinger, Nancy Nowacek, Pil & Galia Kollectiv and Royal NoneSuch Gallery.

Titled after the exhibition Utopia Now! at the CCA Wattis in 2001, Bureaucracy Now! references this drive for a better society by:

•	Bureaucracy as a medium for individual agency
•	Management as self-management
•	Bureaucratic engagement as opening a space for debate and negotiation
•	The aesthetics of the office reconfigured or re-invented
•	Examining how organization occurs, and how it can be co-opted

Featured artist Kristin Neidlinger (Right) outfitted in her piece, Galvanic Extimacy Responder (GER), 2010, GSR, arduino nano, conductive fabric, LEDs and skin. GER (emotiv display) is an externalized intimacy- a display of the personal in the world- the interface by which we identify with the other so that we may gain greater insight of the self. Inspired by Jacques Lacan’s “extimacy” the GER visually displays the wearers emotional state for both the self and the other. A Galvanized Skin Response (GSR) is a classic lie detector test. It reads sweat (nervousness) and translates graph data. The LEDs intercept this and display the palette of red for excited, nervous or awe inspired and for calm and relaxed.

April 17 - 18, 2010

Diamonds in the Crow's Nest, Parlour No. 14, is an investigation of human interactions, specifically within an intimate social setting. Using the media of painting, sculpture, and collage, the artists in the exhibition delve into subject matter including still lives, home interiors, and collections that are at once unusual and familiar. Evidence of exchanges, gatherings, and consumption present in the work prompts the viewers to consider their own vulnerabilities and psychological tendencies, whether they are attending a party, hosting a gathering, giving a gift, or the one who receives. The works negotiate how guests are influenced by their host’s surroundings, belongings, and presentations, while considering the sensitivity of exposing the private to the public. Because Parlour depends on a host with a home for each exhibition, and each exhibition inevitably leads to a social gathering, the viewers of Diamonds in the Crow's Nest will be placed in similar scenarios that the pieces in the exhibition bring into question. The exhibition curated by artist Samuel T. Adams and hosted by artist Carmelle Safdie in her Astoria, Queens home.

Parlour's thirteenth exhibition, Two's Company, features the work of six artist couples living and working in New York City. The exhibition sets out to explore the relationship between their individual artistic practices, raising questions such as: Are there any conscious/ subconscious similarities visible in their bodies of work? Does the former hold true for artists who work in different media? What does each admire about the other's work? What do they find inspiring? To what extent do they influence each other? Each artist's piece in the show has been selected by their significant other, and in some cases, collaborative pieces have been made specifically for the occasion. Two's Company is hosted by Parlour co-founder, Leslie Rosa-Stumpf, and her husband, Lawrence Stumpf, in their Clinton Hill apartment.

Art's Birthday is an annual event first proposed by French Fluxus artist Robert Filliou. On January 17, 1963, Filliou celebrated the 1,000,000th Birthday of Art, which he determined was born when a sponge was dropped into a bucket of water. On January 17th, Parlour and Town Hall will be celebrating Art's 1,000,047th Birthday, and we invite you to bring or send a gift for Art. Your gift can be anything and will be on display/ presented/ performed/ etc., documented and enjoyed by all. This event will also feature birthday cake, refreshments, games, and live feeds to other birthday parties for Art around the world. Please join our Facebook page for "Art's Birthday" and feel free to post any thoughts, ideas, photos, etc.

December 12 - 13, 2009

Parlour is pleased to present its eleventh exhibition, When All Through the House, which features short video works by eleven contemporary artists selected from the open call that Parlour hosted this autumn. The show’s title invokes the first couple of lines from Clement Clarke Moore’s The Night Before Christmas: “Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house/ Not a Creature was stirring, not even a mouse.” In Parlour’s rendition, however, everything is stirring; The works will be installed throughout an old, ivy-covered mansion, pervading the space and creating a dynamic experience for the viewer. Featured artists include: Colleen Asper, Orit Ben-Shirit, Filipe Bessa, Amanda Friedman, Elizabeth Hirsch, Harold Moss, Matthew Newton, Lars Ramussen, Adam Shecter, Mary-Ruth Walsh and Simon Woolham. Parlour No. 11 is hosted in Bushwich by Cedar House, a group of nine renaissance men and women who work in various creative industries.

Parlour No. 10, Between The Acts, is curated by Jennifer Dudley and features the work of Lara Allen, Timothy Hull, Selena Kimball, Mary Reid Kelley, Jessica Slaven, Spirit Tours and Steven Thompson. The works presented in this evening of domestic theater pause on the threshold between deception and revelation by performing transformative illusions, while simultaneously conceding the methods by which those illusions are sustained. Messages from the past are transmitted, the future is divined, secrets are confessed, and perceptions are contradicted as the viewer is cast as both participant and spectator.
Between The Acts will be hosted by Megha Gupta, Alison Duffy and Robert Rhee in their Brooklyn home.

Parlour No. 9, Open Season, features the work of <a href='http://www.beaubuckart.com/'target="_blank">Beau Buck, <a href='http://www.sminz.com/'target="_blank">Stefano Minzi, <a href='http://emilyroz.com/'target="_blank">Emily Roz and <a href='http://www.nataliayovane.com'target="_blank">Natalia Yovane, which ranges from painting and drawing to prints and film that depict wildlife in both natural and displaced settings. The show's installation draws inspiration from old hunting trophy rooms, with their taxidermy, paintings of the chase, etc. However, in Parlour's vision, these animals are not static monuments, but are rather unleashed participants in an uncontainable environment. Open Season is hosted by Colette Robbins and Micah Ganske in their Queens apartment.

September 26 - 27, 2009

Wild Flowers, Parlour No. 8, is an exhibition set on a rooftop terrace overlooking the Lower East Side. The exhibition brings together a group of talented young artists, whose diverse practices have created a broad range of sculptural works that vary in material, color, shape, scale and construction, resulting in a wild flower sculpture garden. Though unique in their starting point, each piece naturally unites with the rest to form a cohesive tapestry. They are organic entities that invade and overcome the space, highlighting the beauty of quotidian forms, growing and sprawling before our eyes, evolving into new forms while feeding upon the existing ones. Participating artists include Corey D’Augustine, Langdon Graves, Nathan Gwynne, Todd Knopke, Ryan O'Connor,
